Start-ups are spending far too much time networking with other start-ups and not enough time growing their business, says Christian Lanng, the chief executive of Tradeshift, a global invoicing and payment platform. He said: "Right now there is a sense that it is very cool to be a start-up. If you are a start-up there is a whole ecosystem of cool events and meet ups you can go to and participate in. It has become a scene. But no great company ever got built on a scene." He added: "While it is great to network and get contacts and all of these things are important, I just fear that it has become a goal in itself. It has been taken way too far. There was a saying that in the 1980s everybody wanted to be in a rock band and then in the 1990s everybody wanted to be a movie star - and now everybody wants to have a start up."
