Before the summer of 2011 it was a bout Materials Science.

Now it is about Biomedical Engineering and Science of Bioengineering.

I will not get into details in this posting, but wanted to have a reminder about TUT on the KK-Net blog.

TUT is an active scientific community of some 2 000 employees and 12 000 students as well as a sought-after partner among research institutions and business life.

Finland's 94th Independence day. Circumstances do matter. We're facing huge challenges in how to deal with the European Union economical problems.

Finland is requested to participate in the safeguarding of the Southern European financial catastrophy.

But at the same time we're becoming a part of the problem. French and German banks are forcing Finns and other Europeans to pay the bill that Portugal, Greece, Italy, Spain and others aren't able to pay.

I have a foreboding feeling that economic growth is spinning out of control in Europe.

We're most probably experiencing battlefield blindness, where the fighters only know and see what happens where they are standing (moving) but are dimly aware that great wheels of action are whirling in the dust and fog around them.

We can creat new sales and distribution channels to reach new customers.

Watching Nokia World 2011 London Live

I did watch the live opening of Nokia World 2011 London. Now, in the afternoon, watching the ondemand video delivery to learn more about the Nokia Microsoft Windows presentations.

Nokia is positioning itself for a come-back. The Nokia Lumia is the new top-of-the-line smart phone.

The look is close to N9 – the Meego thing that has been receiving good reviews.

They are launching two new smart phones: the Lumia and a more affordable version with Windows software.

The team is doing a much better work than a year ago. I still don’t have very much comment from press and the blogosphere.

The Nokia Lumia phones will be delivering in November. User experience will be available in the coming weeks.

I'm writing this posting from a "tomorrows" perspective. Seven years later, we know the impact and possibilities of social networking.

The German Nuclear Moratorium

The Germans decided after the disaster in Fukushima to move away from nuclear energy production.

At the same time, we plan to build two new nuclear facilities in Finland.

A third new reactor is under construction in Olkiluoto.

When the new plants are ready before 2020, we've seven nuclear reactors.

The oldest are in Loviisa.

Going digital was on my mind 1996 – fifteen years ago – when I wrote a letter, fax and email about “my future sawmill” and the need to become familiar with new networking practices.

My first goal was to send “electronic postcards” [SMS] to my collaborating working team. The same tools can be used to communicate with business associates and clients.

Cyber-wood Centre Commercial was a metaphor describing the Digital Direct Channel (DDC). DDC would help us to increase the market share. The vision was at that time [1996] that clients and consumers would discontinue old-fashioned shopping of timber and building components.

Customer would select their own news sources
Centralized marketing and mindset manipulation would be out-of-date
The clients would be surfing the “woods wide web” for accurate and relevant information
It would be impossible to reach young potential buyers through television or print media advertising (young clients were not watching anymore)
My conclusion: people wouldn’t have the time or motivation to spend endless hours watching television'

We’ve to find new tools and means to get in touch with them while “on the road” in their cars. To talk with our customers during lunch-time. When they arrived at the hotel. Anywhere and anytime when they were working.

Some of these estimates are partially true today. It takes time to move from off-line to true and ubiquitous direct digital collaboration.

I did have a clue about what was coming fifteen years ago. But most of my writings from those early days are early warning signals and the signal to noise ratio is pretty high.

The future store means different things to people living in remote rural areas compared to those who’ve shopping centers and huge malls around them.

Sotkamo is a small municipality with eleven thousand inhabitants and about 5 000 to 10 000 tourists during the high seasons.

The social and mobile noises are everywhere. We hear, read and see so many different things in our day.

Blogs, microblog conversations, background news, speeches, lectures, gossip, advise... there is so much all around us. How are we able to cope with all the stuff made available.

How much of it do I pay attention to?

My subconscious hears everything... the information flow is actually programming the day. If I get loads of spam messages to my inbox, I get irritated, or even angry. If I go into a social environment with soft-spoke discussion, it puts you me in a peaceful mood.

Every single day I hear people speaking to me, but am I always really listening to what they say?

Do I listen to the world and people around me and pay close attention to what they have to say? Do I take in the good, and am I able to leave out the bad:

Taking good advice from good people.
I might also get bad advice from people.
I should listen, ask questions, decide for myself.
I did always take notes to be able to reflect on valuable information.
I use the information… but do I really understand it?

The question is whether social media, without its boundaries-free structure is able to help me to become a better person:

Do I understand learning technique that aids my memory?
Sometimes information with high level of intimacy is too invasive, virtual and imprisoning for healthy self-development?

I work with an overview to the history of personal innovation, risk taking, opportunity search, market penetration and globalization of SME’s business operations.

The journey towards the networking digital villages and individual collaborating entrepreneurs started in the early 70s and has been a continuous process since the initiation... long time ago.

This about to change. Nokia has been in trouble for years with its smart phones portfolio and strategy.

We've, as a country, to diversify and find new routes.

Nokia has become too big for Finland and is not anymore willing to drag the old national ecosystem behind it to various parts of the globe.

We're in the middle of the coldest winter climate but yesterday I listened to the birds singing in the center of Sotkamo. It's cold again, days are getting longer. We'd some sun today, the nature looks good.

Well, at least while you're visiting San Fransisco, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Vancouver, Montreal and Atlanta you could look up some of my old friends. Besides, you could start looking for those especially interested in Digital Villages and the Future Store.

Everything is bad. The jobs are gone, nobody knows, will they ever come back. Lots of people had a of hope of better times. They wanted everything to change over night. It doesn't go that way: the bottom line is that the change will take a lot of time. Much more than the average voter is ready to accept.

People are looking at the political chaos and they are disillusioned. People are used to quick fixes, but instantaneous healing isn't possible.

The US industry has been exporting jobs over-seas for twenty years. The fix is going to take at least that time.

The working class is struggling. The unemployment rate is close to ten percent and much higher in areas like Milwaukee with a high number of Afro-American working class citizens.

The manufacturing Mekka is gone, jobs have been exported and might never come back.

Hunger Task Force is trying to help. It's hard for people that have been cut off the unemployment compensation.

Some people do still have "here and there" jobs. Water Street Brewery sign on the screen. Obama promises to bring back the jobs: "We're going to bring back the jobs and turn around the economy."

Transitional jobs are needed to carry over to times when the private sector is ready to grow again. But how to undo a disruptive trend in the industry that has been going on for decades.

GM closes Janesville production plant. The whole community is "For Sale". The auto-impact was 5 100 but the total devastating blow was more then 10 000 jobs less in Janesville.

People try to keep pieces together. Kids are helping to work things out. Wife is traveling to work at a long distance: living in another state. Husband goes to therapy, trying to cope with the family's depressive situation.

The closures have wrecked the life of thousands of families. People need help to handle their stress. There is a growing demand for counseling. Job-seekers are being rejected so much that they aren't able to continue to search.

Food-lines are getting longer. Rock County's single womens shelter is for those who have lost their jobs. They have to leave apartments and look for shelter.

- They don't make you feel bad at the shelter, people are good, but impossible to get jobs. Nothing is available, not washing dishes or making hamburgers.

The transition from old economy to new appears as very painful. More and more people use the job centers as their permanent addresses. They have no place to live. Houses are gone, can't afford to live in a rented apartment.

The price of houses has dropped. There is a lot of people looking for jobs. People loosing their benefits are in real trouble. Those with kids, a house mortgage, loans, and family to take care off are in a very difficult situation.

- The promise of Jamesville is the promise of America, said Obama. Obama did what he possibly could but after his visit they closed the GM plant.

People who don't like Obama think he is anti-Christ, a Muslim, socialist, etc. The health-care plan probably exhausted him. One out of ten Americans don't have a job and the prospects are grim.

Stimulus packages are available for those who want to start own businesses but the unemployment rate is still rather high.

The next election might lead to a shift in power but the "lunatics" might be back in power when the president is elected.

How are 15 million unemployed and the young generation going to vote? Obama did make a lot of promises about a "turn-around". Now these promises appear as unrealistic.

Imagine all the people in social media today. He'd problems with his green card. I was in New York John Lennon was shot. This is a story from those years: including fun and sadness from yesterday.

John was fighting his deportation thing but continued performing. It scares me to learn about the details. Getting back to the roots, that part is coming out again.

The critics were very tuff on John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Bad reviews in the press was new to John. He was really occasionally going to a dark place. Keep on rolling. Any secrets?

Nixon won the second term 1972. It was the end of the bands session when they heard the results. His victory depressed John. He had to continue his fight against deportation. The administration wanted him out.

It was time to bail. There was a big noise. It was that kind of night. John had an affair with a young woman. That lead to a break in their relationship.

He was a part of the band, John never tried to be someone above and higher but a member of the band.

There was understanding from Yoko Ono's part. She was dealing with it, but their relationship wasn't okay.
They were together 24 hours a day.

John goes to LA to find himself. Good morning Southern California, Hollywood. I wanted to play the song. I'm ready. He was a very powerful song writer. Mind Games.

While musicians were playing he changed the lyrics. Dreaming about the past, John begun to loose control. He was honest, he just said it.

The words he chooses are for everybody. Fever is high. Sensing the future. It was not the cleanest play but he was honest. Slightly out of the tune, that's me, John explained.

LA was a totally new experience. They had a lot of visitors. Ringo made a visit. Everybody was just talking, they'd a lot of fun. He wasn't happy. Yoko kicked him out. John didn't want to be a performing bachelor. He wanted back.

Rock and Roll album. All this writing, songs, being a writer and artist. Here they go, drinking heavily. Most of the players out of their mind, including John.

The wall of sound producer came in sober. John was a little over the top. Give me a clue. John had a 5 gallon vodka right besides his guitarr. Trouble looming around the corner.

He was drinking heavily, it was time for trouble. Laughing hysterically. They didn't question him. This guy was not fun to see when drinking heavily, falling fast, going deeper and deeper into it.

Yoko, you've to come to pick him up.

His friend: I remember a very scary night. There was a crowd that had seen him. The crowd was screaming like insane. Tear him away from the people. He was too strong, screaming Yoko's name. Out of control and there was nobody looking after him. He missed Yoko.

You don't know what you have until you loose it. Yoko needed more space. A person can't be alone and shaking, she thought. He was ready to go back, wanted to go. John was drunk and depressed.

It was a productive time for Yoko Ono. Work together with Andy Warhol. Did she get it right? John came back with a basic crew and the wall and bridges album.

Recording the album, they were all sober and the quality was better: In the final stage to get finals into the album. It was Beatles again.

Promote the album: Walls and bridges. It was the communication. Overwhelmed by the moment. Radio interview. Rain this afternoon. Fair and cool, man.

Here am I, how is your relationship? Talking for hours in the album. The milk and honey part wasn't ready yet. He wanted to start over with rock and roll and make a world tour.

Mr Åkerholm pointed out that the EU Baltic Sea Strategy adopted in 2009 will help stimulate a re-emergence of financial inflows to the Baltic region. It will also help re-engage funds in useful activities, but it will not be enough to jumpstart the Baltic economies.

“More attention should be paid by the Baltic countries themselves to increase their attractiveness to financing in order to be able to finance the large investment needs which loom ahead,” said Mr Åkerholm.

A large majority of the activities included in the strategy falls within the focus areas identified by NIB. In the environmental area, NIB is interested in projects supporting the clean-up of the Baltic Sea and mitigating and adaption to the climate change. The Bank is also eager to participate in efforts to improve the access to and security of the energy markets. Internal and external transport links are also crucial for the region as well as research and innovation.

The NIB President noted that the availability of finance provided by the international financial institutions does not guarantee the implementation of projects.

“The Baltic countries are well advised to grab this opportunity, since many of the projects will not only provide short-term stimulus to the economy but also greatly help to strengthen the foundation for longer term sustainable growth. The implementation will not stumble on financing, but viable project structures as well as able and willing borrowers will be needed,” he said.

On Wednesday, May 26, 2010, just after 2:30 p.m., the unthinkable happened: Apple became the largest company in the tech universe, and, after ExxonMobil, the second largest in the nation.

For months, its market capitalization had hovered just under that of Microsoft -- the giant that buried Apple and then saved it from almost certain demise with a $150 million investment in 1997.

Now Microsoft gets in line with Google, Amazon, HTC, Nokia, and HP as companies that Apple seems bent on sidelining.

The one-time underdog from Cupertino is the biggest music company in the world and soon may rule the market for e-books as well.

Learned about him today through Twitter and he had a story about Japanese start-ups.

I’d a break and went swimming in the lake. We’ve had around +30 C and it was refreshing.

The Finnish start-up scene resembles the Japanese one. We don’t comment blogs that much.

People write down their thoughts but the discussions take place in Qaiku, Twitter or Facebook. Some folks enjoy to discuss in LinkedIn.

A big problem for Finland is the nationalistic focus. We’re a member of the European Union and the country’s future depends on export, but still, we try to solve miniscule national problems and don’t have an eye for the global needs.

That’s sad, we’ve talented people, but we’re trapped into a market with only five million inhabitants. Much of the development talk about open innovation takes place in Finnish language. That isn’t by definition very open. There aren’t many others outside the borders of Finland able to read our thoughts.

@saarikko Apple has been able to build a religion based on the support from very loud and loyal believers and active congregations around the globe. The most influential supporters and developers being in USA. Nokia’s beliefs are in engineering and logistics, production and product features. Apple used to have evangelists thirty years ago (@jwa Kawasaki). Nokia is proud of its production expertise. It’s a product manager driven company. And they sure have a lot of products!

Apple’s cultural approach to mobile computing came from desktop publishing and easy to use computer expertise. Nokia tried to leap into mobile computer handsets from mobile devices. Their cultures are very different: Apple succeeded to grab the role of global mobile innovator in the eyes of millions of active and loyal supporters.

Nokia’s top management has a communication problem. They don’t get their message to the press, not the bloggers, not to social media, not to their users and not even to the share-holders. They have problems negotiating with the powerful telecom operators.

Nokia has been using its might and power as a weapon. Apple’s Steve Jobs is more like a persuasion personality. The rock-star performer and sleek salesman. Neither of these companies do have an open culture. But it looks like Apple uses reflection as a learning method better than Nokia. Listening to past experiences is important.

The CUSTOMER DRIVEN DIGITAL PARADISE PROVIDER isn’t on the market yet.

There is a long way to go before managers learn to listen to what their clients want from themselves. Corporations do have big R&D departments where specialists are separated from the chaotic outside world and where they still create their innovations like in old-time monasteries.

But the time of OPEN INNOVATION is just about to emerge.

Nokia could move into this movement on a global scale. Nevertheless, that requires huge changes in corporate cultures, management and leadership. But any company can start TODAY.

There aren’t too many Enterprise 2.0 companies in this world - yet.

My advice is: let the clients get into to the driving seat. SMS didn’t become a success through effective marketing. The kids made it! We’re the Tamagotchis that developers should play with. We’re the world. Tear down the walls of R&D and marketing. Corporate leaders shouldn’t have an office at all. They should meet with people in the streets as much as with technology partners and investors.

Barack Obama did it and became the first black president of his country. Now, Barack is isolated from the crowds and the open discussion is left to other personalities. There is no final solution, but we live in the Facebook, Twitter, Qaiku, blogging, Web 2.0 Social Media era and enterprises have to adapt – NOW.

There is no perfect world, no perfect companies, but in the time of mass production and consumption, the users have an immense impact on the success of any companies. The big ones have to learn that fast or they aren't going to last.

Networking isn’t a new idea. I was building business to business networks in the 70’s. Internet didn’t change my network strategy as much as I imagined.

Before Internet and Social Media, the network idea was more personal. Today, many people have 50 000 friends in their Twitter or Facebook accounts.

But if you want to get something done in your social network, it’s still the quality of your relationship that counts. Nobody can be "a real friend” with 50 000 individuals.

Personal branding and broadcasting is another aspect. Sure, we can broadcast messages to millions. Internet celebrities can use their friendship status to deliver their message to a large population. They seldom collaborate on even terms with their friends.

Cross-border Collaboration

Viik, born in Tallinn, himself went to Finland to finish his studies at Helsinki University of Technology in 1990, the year before independence, at a time the neighbor was itself starting to specialize in technology.

Estonia's proximity helped it catch up with the world's rapid technological developments, and with Viik's help, became a pioneer.

Estonia's border guard was one of the first in the world to exchange information via the Internet.

With the help of Viik's "revolution of elitists" the Internet then spread like wildfire to all sectors of society in the small country of 1.4 million, with hundreds of open Internet points being set up mostly in the countryside.

What should we do with the drunken soldier? I’m talking with a number of my friends about the future of Internet.

There is the danger for a strictly controlled environment with little understanding for the real life.

Finns are trying to think how to move ideas and concepts from the written paper to realities.

That’s a great job for pragmatic and engineering oriented Finnish organizations. But that’s not going to be enough in the future. We’ve to develop a broader survival strategy including the needs and understanding of contemporary individuals.

USA does still inspire the development of blogging in the Nordic and Baltic states.

Sweden has a number of very successful female fashion bloggers attracting huge numbers of readers and up to 200 comments of a single posting isn’t unusual.

The blogosphere in Finland does have the same kind of fashion bloggers but we’ve a smaller population. Some of the Swedish girls have been making big money with their blogs through sponsoring. The cash-flow to popular Finnish bloggers is however much smaller.

I learned today that 32 763 Finns are using Twitter. The Facebook population is much larger. I figure that the number is close to one million users. The IRC Gallery is populated by teenagers and young people and is supposed to have about 800 000 members. Need to check these numbers before BlogFest in Tallinn.

Swedish political bloggers will have a show-case during the upcoming elections. A few popular bloggers are trying to step into politics with the support of a big audience reading their blogs.

This year's (2010) Futures Forum was the kick-off for the wider discussion of Estonia's mid-term future. The purpose of the debate is to reach a shared vision about the possible sources of economic growth for Estonia in the rapidly-changing world.

The day was opened by the President of the Republic of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who has pointed out that the world economy confronts us with a number of serious questions in need of addressing over the next decade. I continue to think about “the million possibilities” bloggers and social media content producers could do to enhance the collaboration between Estonia and Finland – and why not between the Baltic region and Scandinavia.

First, we need travel blogs telling about travel and tourist experiences. Photo- and videoblogs could feature specific routs and tell about places to visit. These stories could be continues when travellers are adding new information over time.

Second, what do we know about consumer oriented industries? Small and big businesses should be opened up to give a kind of Big-Brother insight into the corporate life.

Third, any reporting and digital storytelling should be continuous. It doesn’t help if we’ve a single blog posting or even a spurt of information. That small peace of information will drown in the immense digital ocean. We should learn from those who produce soap operas. They make the actors familiar house-hold names through a continues and detailed focus on the central persons daily lives.

I wrote this blog posting six years ago. Blogging was a new trend on Internet at that time. People started to speak about social media. A few years later the microblogs became popular. Now, hundreds of millions are blogging.

My first personal attempt to “blog” started 1997 with Wiirila Werkossa Wiikottain. It contained short stories about my life in the small village (Wirby the Global Village) where I was born a long time ago.

Justin Hall was a sophomore at Swarthmore College in 1993 when he heard about the Web. He coded some pages by hand in HTML. His “Justin’s Links from the Underground” may well have been the first serious weblogs, long before specialized weblog software tools became available.

The first visitor to Hall’s site from outside the university came in 1994. He explained his motivations in an email:

"Why did I do it? The urge to share of oneself, to join a great global knowledge sharing party. The chance to participate in something cool. A deep geek archivist’s urge to experiment with documenting and archiving personal media and experience. In college I realized that Proust and Joyce would have loved the web, and they likely would have tried a similar experiment—they wrote in hypertext, about human lives. It was journalism, but I was mostly reporting on me. In the early days, I wrote about the web, on the web, because a few [13 from tom pain to blogs and beyond] other people were doing so.”

He continues: “Once search engines and link directories emerged, I didn’t need to catalog everything online. So I enjoyed having a tool to map my thoughts and experiences, and a chance to connect those thoughts and experiences to the rest of the electrified English-speaking world!"

Nokia makes a lot of phones

Nokia makes a lot of phones. Most of them are good for basic telephony and text messaging.

Nokia knows how to produce at a low cost and the company has a great distribution organization in Asia, Africa and South-America.

Nokia does still have a big market share in Europe. Nokia’s role in USA is declining and it’s close to zero in Japan. What about Russia.

Nokia’s phones does connect to the Internet. Surfing around should and could be easier.

Nokia has been developing an iPod killer for years. We’ve not seen that fantasy gadget yet.

There will be a new Symbian operating system available after the summer seasons. The Symbian promises to enable better smart phones. It’s true that Nokia sells more “smart phones” than Apple, but how smart are they?

I’ve a Nokia E71 and it’s good for SMS (text messaging). I like the camera and the video is useful. It connects to the OVI service but I don’t know what I should do there.

Today, I updated the FREE navigation and it wasn’t as painful as the E71 complete program updating. I didn’t like the way I lost quite a lot of valuable information.

Nokia has huge challenges: Symbian, the killer phone, America, Japan and soon Europe. Is the company going to make it?

How much time does the company have? Something dramatic has to happen before Christmas.

What kind of airlines do we need?

What kind of airlines do we need in the future? I’m not the one to make the decisions. Twenty years ago, in a small village in France, the world vision was very different.al

Today, we understand the motives of terrorists and the global decision makers. In addition, there’s a deeper understanding of the force of natural incidents.

What does really happen in Iceland? Do we understand the regional or European impacts? I’d like to say, we don’t understand the power of the nature.

Finland is a microscopic BBP in the outskirts of the global economy. I’ve no idea about how to relate to the changes imposed by the present realities.

The 21st century will be the century of change. Some people say that “more changes will change in more places in the next 10 years than in the previous 100”. Most countries are not ready for this dizzying ride. How about little Finland?

Writing a best selling change management program after the earth quakes in Haiti, Chile and China shouldn’t be difficult. The latest addition to the global change program are the ash clouds from Iceland. Cloud computing comes second to nothing compare to the power of the natural eruptions.

In these days I do support the idea of “small is beautiful” and catastrophes can happen as long as they don’t start happening in my backyard. Small changes are wonderful but the disruptive one’s should take place somewhere else. I’m only capable to take care of minor things. I can talk about huge transformations but don’t take the drama too close to my home place.

I guess, I’m becoming a conservative who would like to live a peaceful life in my little town an just watch the big events on my TV. Dramatic changes aren’t fun when they are getting closer and closer to my well managed daily life.

About The Recession and how to get back on track

When can we expect that the recession is over? Gloomy news about the housing problems in U.S. started in 2007. But the recession started officially a year later.

The worst year of GNP decline in Finland was 2009, and we’re now moving very slowly out of the recession. The Finnish unemployment is expected to rise to over ten percent this spring.

There are hopes for better times at the end of this year. Nevertheless, it’s going to take several years for the Finnish economy to recover. Maybe the whole decade of 2010 – 2020. There U.S. Economy is moving forward while Europe is struggling with a new problem. Airlines have been grounded for several days due to the volcano eruption in Iceland.

"We are not out of the woods yet, and there are still a lot of things that could go wrong, but things are improving," said David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor's in New York.

In economics, the term recession generally describes the reduction of a country's gross domestic product (GDP) for at least 2 quarters.

The usual dictionary definition is "a period of reduced economic activity", a business cycle contraction. The United States housing market correction (a consequence of United States housing bubble) and subprime mortgage crisis has significantly contributed to a recession. U.S. employers shed 63,000 jobs in February 2008, the most in five years.

Former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan said on April 6, 2008 that "There is more than a 50 percent chance the United States could go into recession.". On October 1st, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that an additional 156,000 jobs had been lost in September. On April 29, 2008, nine US states were declared by Moody’s to be in a recession.

Although the US Economy grew in the first quarter by 1%, by June 2008 some analysts stated that due to a protracted credit crisis and "rampant inflation in commodities such as oil, food and steel", the country was nonetheless in a recession. The third quarter of 2008 brought on a GDP retraction of 0.5% the biggest decline since 2001. The 6.4% decline in spending during Q3 on non-durable goods, like clothing and food, was the largest since 1950.

Many economists predict the 10.1 percent unemployment rate reached in October 2009 will turn out to be the peak for this downturn, the most severe the country has suffered since the 1930s. But they say the jobless rate will decline only gradually and remain around 9.3 percent by year's end.

"The economy is stabilizing," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics. "More industries are showing signs of revival, and that is helping to support growth in more parts of the country."

The future of the American economy will depend to a great extent on consumers' attitudes, which have changed deeply and perhaps permanently in this recession, writes Prune Perromat in Huffington Post.

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in southern Iceland has erupted twice in less than a month, raising concerns that it could trigger a larger and more dangerous eruption at a volatile volcano nearby, writes Washington Post. The scope of the flight restrictions surpassed any seen since World War II.

In Europe, economists were assessing the longer-term impact of the historic flight disruptions, but winners and losers were emerging. Airlines and air-freight companies were the most affected, with the aviation industry facing losses estimated at $200 million a day. British Airways and other airlines said they are not insured against groundings by volcanic clouds.

Lufthansa has been making test flights with ten planes at different heights to find out the effects of the volcanic ash an particles on the turbines. The tests are implicating no damage. The airlines are trying to get back in air as soon as possible.

Rail lines were seeing booming business, however, with many adding trains and operating at standing-room-only capacity. Auto rental agencies in Paris were running out of cars, and some taxi companies were scoring enormous cross-national fares.

Given the global links of international air travel, the problems in Europe were beginning to spread chaos worldwide. As far away as Singapore, the backup of international passengers was so bad that hotels rooms were becoming hard to find in the city-state.

As airlines have cut costs, they have also reduced capacity over the past two years, meaning there will be few spare seats when flights resume. It will take a long time to get back to normal. This event is a remainder of the strength of natural forces. There is no perfect technology for all situations.

European aviation authorities said Saturday that commercial flights had been grounded across northern and central Europe, including Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, most of France and Germany, Hungary, Ireland, northern Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and Britain. Only 5,000 of the region's 22,000 regularly scheduled commercial flights took off Saturday, with Sunday disruptions potentially worse.

Prevailing winds have left Iceland's one major airport, in Reykjavik, open for business. Industry officials said that U.S. carriers have had to shuffle their fleets to replace planes stranded in Europe but that there have been no knock-on cancellations of U.S. domestic flights.

The air-travel crisis caused by a spectacular volcanic cloud emanating from Iceland escalated sharply Saturday, with President Obama and other world leaders forced to cancel plans to attend the Polish president's funeral and millions of passengers from Washington to New Delhi left stranded by a bottleneck that could last for weeks.

One bright spot appeared in Iceland, where Foreign Ministry officials noted somewhat decreased activity early Saturday at the bellowing volcano. But they said that the eruption pattern had not seemed to change much since Eyjafjallajokull blew Wednesday and that the duration of the eruption was anybody's guess.

A breakdown in air cargo shipments into the largest cities in Europe, including London, Paris and Berlin, left supermarkets warning of looming shortages of fresh produce. The groundings meant fruit from Africa and South America were rotting in crates in their countries of origin.

That means, we know how to handle a rapid development of the infrastructure. Most European countries had much more time to do the same job.

This should mean golden days for the content industry when new platforms are released every third year.

Personally, I think iPad will have an important role in my professional life in the beginning of next year: 2010.

My idea is to transform it to a presentation platform that we can “give away” to our bioenergy and environmental customers, clients and partners. The most important stuff can be downloaded to the machine for instant presentation: movies, pictures, presentations, technical information and CHP-plant details.

Multitasking wanted by most users

Craig’s opinion: “They did a really good job of engineering the device and keeping the price down. You can find plenty of people talking about that. I recommend the reporting from Consumer Reports, since they're totally trustworthy” and continues “You do want to be aware that the iPad has unusual USB charging needs.”

Craig Newmark would like to see multitasking, and he thinks “have confidence we'll see it”. Multitasking has been discussed by both iPad critics and enthusiasts.

Craig Newmark would like it because:

he wants to listen to stuff in the background, like NPR
Many apps need to do a lot of work to restart properly, like Twitter

Again, a really good job of engineering from the Apple people. It looks like another great product. Some of the aspects will become evident after two to three years. Apple has probably done it again.

On the road along National Route 5

On the road yesterday from Loviisa to Lahti and further on to Mikkeli, Kuopio, Iisalmi, Kajaani and Vuokatti. That’s the tourist center.

This building is along the road between Iisalmi and Kajaani.

That’s a mythical place: M. A. Numminen mentioned about the Baari in his book about beer.

I’ve never been inside but the myth exists. I’ve been traveling past this building hundreds of times but never ever had the chance to drag my feet inside.

It’s not a big deal but I got a photo of the building while in the back-seat and Olli was driving. I’m curious.

Next time I might get the opportunity and promise to write more details about this building.

Where should we start? Is there a way to expand with new sales and collaboration models?

The traditional model starts with national sales; the platform and reference base has to be built in the local market.

Next, you start to approach your neighbors: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Baltic countries, Poland, Hungary, etc. Russia is a big challenge. There is a lot of competition in the traditional Western European markets.

But is all this wrong if we work out from a collaborative business approach? I think so. The world has changed a lot and knowledge transfer can take place in very different environment.

Old pictures and drawings are fun. They show that the world didn’t change as much as we tend to think. This one is from 1986 and the quality of the picture is poor, but it has an important message to me. Basic production processes are operating within the same frameworks even today. Computer systems are much more advanced but the computers do only have an assisting role in the production process. They are good for planning, automation, logistics operations, etc. but what else can they do?

Future Store Concept in Silence

Figuring out the Future Store Concept started according to this picture 1999 and is still an idea that we’ve been talking about in small groups until this year.

It’s time to open and start to speak about the Future Store in public. The FSC idea is much older. It started to grow as a brain child already 1987 when we were working with RFID for public transport.

Closed garden discussions have to be taken out from behind the walls. I will start to do this during this spring and try to find ways to get the concept to real store environments. We’ve a project in eastern Finland where the concept could be applied within a Digital Villages and Real Estate development project.

Are anyone familiar with the Fusionopolis project in Singapore? It’s about “where science meets business and arts” and a development by one-north.

I got some information about Fusionopolis a few years ago and would like to know how this real-estate project has proceeded. It’s a rather big one and it would be interesting to know how recession-proof this project has been.

The conception and building started most probably in good time before the global recession. How many companies are now operating in Fusionopolis?

About election, media and the message in Sweden and Finland

This is a part of a discussion that started in Qaiku yesterday. @hypocrisy @personaleu @oldpolitics @hyvaelama I see several important things in this thread. We've a cross-border discussion about politics and upcoming election issues in Sweden and Finland. I also agree that it's not the media but the message that counts. It would be great to have much more open Qaiku collaboration with you folks at the other side of Aland... and European / Global scale.

We've the deepest export dive since 1917, in 90 years, and our politicians don't grasp the dramatic issue of industrial transformation. The single industry related discussion is about having one to three or the green alternative zero nuclear power plants. I'm not against the nukes but we'd need to elaborate what this country has to do to get back to business 2010 - 2020.

The Finnish high-tech and mobile miracle isn't innovating as it used to do. We need a ground-breaking remodeling of the industrial landscape. We would need hundreds of SMEs to step forward with own products and systems for the global market. We need to get out of our Europe dependence. And our existing politicians are still mostly thinking about national, regional and municipality issues.

The mental mind-set is over one hundred years old

There is almost nobody talking about this much needed remodeling. Ok, I'm exaggerating a little... but there is no imaginative talk about how we should finance the well-fare state and the modernization of Finland.

There are small groups in Qaiku #Suomi2 with interesting ideas and innovative approaches but this is not a platform for power brokers, yet. The single most important re-industrialization issue would be to transform at least one hundred SME's go growth companies through effective globalization of operations.

There is a potential for such an expansion but they need to move from sub-supplier status (to Finnish big industries) to independent organizations with world class products. I see how it could happen but there isn't even public talk about how this transformation should be organized.

It'd be nice to know how Sweden is tracking it's way out from the global economical crisis. Do you've a formula that could be applied to Finland as well?

A smaller evolution to improve the productivity of 24/7 society is microworks organization (mikroarbete). We've counted that if every Finn would buy microwork for one euro per day every year, that would lead to an annual business of 2 billion euros.

I didn't bring up social politics or well-fare issues but methods to pay the bill. It's possible that this isn't good politics at all while the average voter isn't motivated about the national cash-flow. But if we don't get this changed, Finland can soon start to advertise itself as the northern Greece. Our debt load is growing with a dramatic speed. If we don't get a change now, the problems will be much deeper 2015 - 2020.

What should we do to make this a milking cash-cow again?

The Finnish banking system is still in a relatively good shape. Their results are down from year 2008 but the prospects for 2010 is that the margins will rise and their profitability improve.

A new trend is that banks wants to meet their clients IRL as in real life persons. Online banking has a long tradition in Finland and most people don’t visit the bank offices at all while all payments and transactions take place over the Internet. My digital notebook for today has some interesting notifications about this trend. I might be writing more stories about banks and their intention to get in touch with their customers again.

The financial crisis started from USA but now big problems are emerging from the southern European countries.

They have finally to take care of their budget balance.

One to three new nuclear power plants

The Finnish parliament has to decide, this spring or this year, how many nuclear power plants we’re going to build to ensure “clean and cheap energy” for the Finnish industry.

We’ve two nuclear power plants in Loviisa and two in Olkiluoto, at the west coast, and a third is under construction in the same area by Areva.

If the politicians decide about one more, it’s possible that Fennovoima will build one in Simo – in northern Finland. The Loviisa I and II would get an extended life of perhaps twenty years and that would mean that life would continue as usual.

With three new mills, one could come to Loviisa, one to Simo, and the third one to Olkiluoto. That would provide a proper distribution of units and ensure the availability of employees to build the plants.

It would be nice to have your opinions about 1 to 3 plants in Finland. The green party is in favor of nuclear free energy productions.

Random Access Radio

I learned a bout Random Access Radio through Paul Swanson. Let’s take a journey to the RAR home page:

“What are we all about? Well, RAR (Random Access Radio) was developed from a thought to give the listeners a little more than a recorded podcast at the original show “Sound Check with CK.” It was merely an extension of the studio podcast that needed…in my opinion a way to engage the listeners and make the show more interactive. We have accomplished that here with RAR Live on the Video Channel at LiveStream.

Now the experience isn’t just downloading the show at Itunes or from the website, but now you can see it being produced, chat with me (CK) and also get a chance to interact with others while we are recording the show. The podcast is still alive despite the “live” show because the recording of the show is posted at a later date. All in all, the experience will make you realize exactly how much terrestrial radio is canned.

For those of you who don’t know about the show, it all started in the attic in Chicago in August 2007.

I was a blogger who wrote about sports, life, politics, and current events. I was also into taking pictures of the amazing Chicago sunsets, but I still had that passion to be heard. It was at this time that Sound Check, the “virtual round table”, was formed. We had a format that if you listen to any of the episodes before Episode 86, you will hear opinions from many different contributors. Sound Check was blessed to have such opinionated people on the show, and that’s what made it interesting.

After seeing the show mature and people start doing their own things, I decided to take a break and that is when Sound Check took a 2 month break to start Random Access Radio. It was a short stint on the web that saw a great name going in a direction that wasn’t to my liking. Things changed in a hurry. We backed off that production and kept things quiet for a bit and started up Sound Check again with what the passion was all along – music.

Starting with Episode 88, Sound Check went from the “virtual round table” to the “All Request Podcast” just from asking people on Twitter “What is your favorite Classic Rock song?”

That was all we needed.

The seed for RAR was planted and no one knew it. The live show was being worked on behind the scenes and the show was to go live right on schedule. With the help of Paul Swansen and my friend Dizzy from Georgia and others(*), the show was tested, software was tested, video was tested and we were ready to broadcast.
So, now all you have to do is tune in on Tuesday nights at 9:15 pm EST at www.livestream.com/randomaccessradio for the video, chat and music, or at www.randomaccessradio.com for the live audio stream only.Tune in and give us a chance to play your favorite songs!

Innovaatiojuna Innovationtrain and Aalto on Tracks

There’s been talk about the Innovationtrain 2.0 with destination to The World Expo in Shanghai.

We had some talk about flying mission in Qaiku. It could take place after the summer. The intention would be to make an extensive export – import drive during the mission.

The Aalto Innovation University of Helsinki is planning a long train trip from Helsinki to Shanghai. Take a look at Aalto on Tracks. They plan a trip with 100 participants.

I see no competition between these missions. The Aalto university has more resources than the self-organizing Innovaationjuna group. The flight in October and November could consist of 20 to 50 people. Sponsors urgently needed. I guess the budget should be 50 000 to 100 000 euro to make an impact.

Buzzing from the middle of Snowhere

I’ve been microblogging with Google Buzz for two days and I feel this time Google brings to us something that is more than Orkut.

What’s so good about it? Buzz is out there in public for the first days and a lot will change during the coming months.

I don’t need to fill a SUBJECT description. Most blogs still have a headline. Microblogs don’t ask for a subject. You just start writing.

The big thing about Buzz is that it will grow very rapidly. Facebook, Twitter, Friendfeed and many other services has to change or die. Buzz is challenging the microblogging format with a huge gmail customer base.

I hope for a consolidation within the social media sphere. We’ve seen too many innovations. It’s time for all of us to get back to WORK. We just need a few platforms, not a myriad of alternatives.

There’s a need to make social networking and collaboration productive or it will decline to a therapeutic exercise.

The Google Buzz is out

Where’re all the people? Nobody goes to seminars and shows anymore. Everybody is socializing on Buzz or Facebook.

Buzz is the new kid on the block and it might become an instant success.

Buzz integrates your friends on Gmail and other Google services. In addition, you can also integrate many other things to Buzz.

I never really got started with Google Wave but Buzz seems to hit my nerve this time. There is a need for consolidation in the social space. We’ve too many platforms in relation to available time.

iTraining builds success around networking people

All successful projects build communities of supportive engaged activists who identify with the project and keep it productive and useful.

The best seminars are about the other people you meet during lunch or the coffee breaks. Traditional congresses don’t give participants a great deal of freedom to participate and engage in the development.

The same problem applies to training and business coaching. There is no value to have one person speaking and forcing hundreds to listen when we talk about adult education or business management training.

Give credit and and air-time to resourceful people (figuring out together as a working team)
We start from an idea or problem definition (one page, photos, graphics…)
Internet provides easy online preparation, action documentation and training feedback

The first step is to build an iTraining community of experienced coaches. I want to see participants supporting each other. It’s essential to get people excited about the prospect of online and open collaboration.

Start with the basics, understand the basic skills of the participants
Many people have still not ever sent a picture to someone or a server with a cell phone
Make it simple (KISS) to start with and start communicating
There is space for everybody, we don’t need to restrict or limit

We’ve to build a tight feedback loop between those who participate in seminars and those who can provide continuous support and advice over Internet.

Creating a sustainable business development model for improved productivity
The web is available for interactive coaching
We’ve to be absolutely open
Together we’re able to find better solutions or more valid questions

The goal is to create an environment where iTrainers and participants can support each other, and to make it easier to implement the wanted change management programs.

Sometimes we work towards the impossible
Celebrate success and compete to reach a higher level
Give people the opportunity to find new universes in their daily work
We often start out in foggy environment and end up placing data in the cloud

Descriptive model for the network you build:

Speed (how fast can the team figure it out?)
Insight (illustration of problem or goal, get people to talk and exchange ideas and questions)
Avoid secrecy (blog, wiki, social media, Twitter, FB, Qaiku, Ning, etc.)
Is bigger always better? We never know…

Dream Society and Happiness as a value in iTraining

I learned about the Dream Society book this morning through a radio program discussing audio advertising and realized that this could explain one of the corner stones of iTraining and the values behind it.

My Innovationtrain – Innovaatiojuna Started here in Kajaani 12.1.2010

The innovationtrain was the most important event of January 13, 2010. We’re now working with the next steps.

iTraining is a concept that was tested during the Helsinki – Oulu – Helsinki one day journey.

The next step will take place at the Flexible Services Seminar in Espoo 4.2.2010.

I’m also working with new ideas concerning distributed energy fro villages in Russia. Should get more time to get into some real estate projects in need for new business models.

And I returned to the Kajaani railway station late in the evening of January 14, 2010.

Almost black and white

The Finnish nature is 2010 more black and white than fifty years ago. The climate change powerpoints are not representing the reality outside your living room window.

I was visiting my friends in Ruotsinpyhtaa and here 550 km’s south of Sotkamo the nature is just as beautiful and cold as most of us can remember from post-war childhood memories.

This isn’t the cold war or not even post-recession. The climate didn’t change towards warm and cozy. We’re not going to get palm trees to the southern part of the Finland next summer. There are no hopes fore vineyards. Finland has a climate this year that is one of the coldest in the past fifty years.

The climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, didn’t reach a clear resolution about what to do to fight the climate change. Lots of people now think that the climate change campaign was a smoke screen and a political campaign. We’ve more snow in southern Finland than anyone could imagine. The temperatures are – 20 to 30 Centigrade. It’s really cold.

Nothing in the nature follows the dooms-day predictions by climate change predictors. What did go wrong? Did nature re-calibrate itself? Do we need to re-shape those outdated theories? Or should we be more critical about the big screen presentations delivered at high-profile seminars?

Humans are not very good at predicting the future. We should not try to play God.

People in Haiti might have a clue about how wrong scientists can be. How about the woodoo priests? What did they know about the earth quake in advance?

Open Innovation is like a Candle in the Black Box

The innovation train was a great success and we’re seeing new emerging inventions.

Some new ideas are boiling around the Nokia service. The Nokia Maps combined with the Ovi service provides numerous new possibilities.

We’re working with iTraining concepts that can be applied to big organizations. We’ve the tools for Connecting People and how to become more Social but there is only a small fraction of users familiar with the vast possibilities.

A lot of mental and inventive work is needed to make our society really social.
